Clinical pharmacology The active substance of propalin is phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride, a synthetic sympathomimetic, which acts on alpha- and, to a lesser extent, beta-adrenergic receptors, and also indirectly increases the release of norepinephrine from the depot. It has a direct effect on the muscles of the lower urinary tract (increases tone and enhances contraction of the urethral sphincter and urogenital diaphragm). When administered orally, phenylpropanolamine is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is excreted from the body in urine unchanged or in the form of inactive metabolites. Phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride reaches peak concentration in blood plasma after 1-2 hours. No accumulation of the drug is observed during treatment. Release form and composition 1 ml of 5% solution for oral use contains 50 mg of phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride as an active ingredient and an auxiliary component - sorbitol syrup. In appearance, it is a homogeneous colorless transparent suspension. It is packaged in plastic bottles of 100 ml and packed one bottle in a cardboard box complete with a dosing syringe. How to take, course of administration and dosage Propalin is administered orally mixed with food during feeding at a dose of 3 drops per 4 kg of animal weight 2 times a day, or 1 drop per 2 kg of animal weight 3 times a day. Dogs weighing 25 kg or more are given propalin at a dose of 0.75 ml per 25 kg of animal weight 2 times a day, or 0.5 ml per 25 kg of animal weight 3 times a day. The duration of use of the drug is unlimited. Contraindications Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. It is prohibited to use propalin in pregnant and lactating animals. The drug is not recommended for use simultaneously with other sympathomimetics, anticholinergic drugs and tricyclic antidepressants. Propalin indications for use Prescribed only to dogs for urinary incontinence caused by functional insufficiency of the urethral sphincter. Side effects Allergic reactions are possible in hypersensitive animals. When used correctly and in the correct dosage, no side effects are observed. Storage conditions List B.
